In 2024, individuals and businesses alike are becoming more aware of the impact our everyday products have on human and environmental health. At Clean Bees, we wear our ecological responsibility on our sleeves, and this extends to the cleaning products we use in each of our Fort Collins cleaning services.
However, some folks may rightfully wonder whether natural cleaning products are as effective and efficient as their traditional counterparts. Today we break down when and why we use natural cleaning products, and why, yes, they do indeed work quite spectacularly for nearly all of your home cleaning needs.
Why the Right Cleaning Product Matters
Before you or a professional cleaner uses a cleaning product in your home, it is critical to know how this product was made and what chemicals it contains. While not all of the chemicals found in typical cleaning products are harmful, there are some that are potentially dangerous, posing serious human health risks and environmental issues. At best, the dangerous substances can cause irritation to the eyes or throat and produce headaches, but at worst, they can cause serious health side effects such as cancer and even be corrosive or flammable.
One key aspect to pay attention to is whether a cleaning product contains volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Research is in the process of discovering the extent and severity of health issues caused by VOCs, but certain studies already link VOC exposure to chronic respiratory illnesses.
Cleaning supplies that may contain harmful chemicals include, but are not limited to:
- Bleach
- Air fresheners and other aerosols
- Dish soap
- Detergent
- Wood and upholstery cleaners
- Metal and floor polish
- Oven cleaners
Manufacturers are not required by United States law to list all ingredients in cleaning products. Indeed, just because a cleaning product is labeled "green" does not necessarily mean they are safer. On our behalf, we choose to partner with Boulder Clean by 1908 Brands. Their products are listed by the Safer Choice standards outlined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Types of Natural Cleaners
Natural cleaning products are a straightforward alternative to using products with harmful chemicals. You can find eco-friendly products using natural ingredients covering surface cleaners, air fresheners, laundry detergents, soaps, and more.
There are two broad types of natural cleaners: manufactured natural cleaning products and homemade natural cleaning alternatives.
Various brands, such as B Clean, manufacture natural cleaning products using plants and minerals and no toxic chemicals. The products are packaged and ready to go - Clean Bees uses these for the majority of our Fort Collins cleaning service needs. It’s also possible to use safe and eco-friendly cleaning alternatives using homemade ingredients.
What are Homemade Cleaners?
Whether you need an all-purpose cleaner, stain removal, glass cleaner, or hardwood polish, there’s a chance you already have some ingredients at home that can get the job done.
We urge caution in using these experimentally, especially the harsher ingredients, but here is a list of common household products that can be used dynamically to create natural cleaning products on your own.
- Baking soda: laundry detergent
- Lemon/ lemon juice: stains, air freshener, surface cleaner
- Water: many different natural cleaning products
- Vinegar: all-purpose cleaner
- Essential oils: cleaners and air fresheners
- Rubbing alcohol: window cleaner
- Cornstarch: window cleaner
- Dish soap: floor cleaner, carpet stains
Pros and Cons of Natural and Homemade Cleaners
So, do natural cleaning products actually work? From our extensive cleaning experience with homes in Northern Colorado, we can say with certainty that they work wonderfully well.
We prefer to use natural cleaning products manufactured by B Clean, but there are several advantages to using natural and homemade cleaners including:
- Naturally derived ingredients
- Effective cleaning
- No toxic chemicals that are harmful to you, your family, your home, or the environment
- Products are not tested on animals
- Cost-effectiveness
- Better air quality
- Better smell
- Reduced conflict with allergies
- Conserves resources
- You know exactly what type of ingredients are being used
There are some instances, however, when natural or homemade cleaners are not quite as effective as traditional products. At Clean Bees, we only use these more aggressive products when our usual natural options are unable to get the job done. However, should you wish to opt out of any specific product during your Fort Collins cleaning service, we are happy to ensure we only use those that you are comfortable with.
