Tips for Washing Your Down Comforter

Washing down comforters, pillows, and other down-filled items might at first seem like a job for dry-cleaning experts, but in most cases, this is not actually necessary. If you have these on your laundry list, no need to worry! Here are our biggest tips for washing your down comforter along with all the rest of your beloved down items – from the professional cleaners at Clean Bees!

Can You Wash Down Comforters at Home?

One of the most frequent questions we get about cleaning down items is whether or not you can clean them at home. The answer to this is yes, depending on the size of your washing machine. Pillows, pillowcases, and sheets are likely not an issue, and full-, queen-, and king-size bed comforters are also capable of home-washing if you have a full-size washing machine.

Dry cleaning is always an option if you want to ensure there is no shrinkage, but it isn’t always important to do so. If the fabric is especially delicate or has been damaged already, it is probably best to go with a dry cleaner; but if the comforter or cover has an outer layer that is cotton or a cotton/synthetic blend, you can usually wash it at home with no worries at all.

Best Washing Method

Before you start the washing process yourself, always read any specific instructions highlighted on the tag of the item you will be washing. Also, check carefully for any holes or worn stitching – repair these with small fine stitches to prevent any down-stuffing loss during the laundering process. Lastly, check the comforter for any stains. Tough stains like blood or urine can be managed with an enzymatic cleaner while easier stains like food and water can be treated with a color-safe bleach. Treat the stains on the cover first (ensuring that it is away from the down to prevent damage), then when the stain is removed, your item is ready to be washed.

The best washing method involves using the correct:

  • Water Temperature – All temperatures technically work, but cool (not cold) water is the far superior option. Fabric can shrink up to 8% in hot water, and too cold of water is harsh on the down.
  • Soap – Always use gentle soaps without extra additives. The simpler the better. If you want whitening, ensure that you use non-chlorine bleach.
  • Spin Speed – Utilize the mile-gentle spin speed available on your washing machine as this will help to prevent any damage. Other guides may recommend using the fastest spin speed to remove as much moisture as possible during the process, but this can be done just as easily with an extra spin cycle.
  • Fabric Softener – Do not use fabric softener! We do not recommend using fabric softener because it will coat the down and reduce its overall fluff.

A little-known tip is to add a sock stuffed with two tennis balls (secured with a knot) in the machine with your down items. This will keep your down from bunching up and will help loosen soil from the items.

Best Drying Method

Similar to the washing process, once your items are done in the washing machine, you’ll want to move them into a dryer that has plenty of room. Once again, add the sock stuffed with tennis balls to help fluff the down and keep it evenly distributed.

When it comes to drying your down items, consider the following:

  • Heat – Use a low heat to ensure you won’t have any scorching.
  • Dry time – A longer dry time will be required due to the lower heat, and it may even require multiple cycles.
  • Clumping or odor – Both of these are nothing to be concerned about. If there is clumping or odor, it simply means that the items are not dry yet. Down bears a distinctive odor when wet but will disappear once it’s dry. Ensure items are completely dry to avoid mold!
  • Dryer sheets – Feel free to use these for freshness.
  • No ironing or steaming – This has the potential to damage your down.

How Often to Wash a Down Comforter

You’ll want to avoid washing your down items too frequently, so we always recommend using a cover to protect against dirt, stains, and spills.

For any type of down you’re cleaning, the process always begins by reading the manufacturer’s tag which will suggest the frequency of washing. Usually, this is once a year but it can also be every 2-3 years. To space the washing out even further, you can freshen your down comforter by taking it outside on a warm, breezy day and letting it sit in the sun for a couple of hours.

How to Store a Down Comforter

Some people love a down comforter year-round, while others just prefer them in the colder months. If you decide to store yours away, ensure that it retains breathability. It must be stored completely dry, and we recommend a location that is not too compressed (keeping it fluffy) and has some airflow.
