Cleaning can be a dreadful task to check off of your to-do list. Unfortunately, it is an absolute necessity in order to maintain a happy, healthy life. Clutter is proven to lead to more difficulty concentrating and processing information. That’s right, procrastinating on cleaning can actually be detrimental beyond just being an eyesore. In fact, a disorganized, dirty home can actually cause you to feel more anxious, stressed, or depressed. We know. Cleaning isn’t always a great way to spend your precious time off. But there are ways to make it more bearable – dare we say fun! That’s right, these are our top tips on how to have fun while you clean!
Don’t Do the Whole House in One Go
Break the task down into small, manageable chunks. You don’t have to clean the entire home toe to tip in one fell swoop. Instead, divide up your cleaning by rooms, areas, or floors. Maybe Saturday is reserved for the bathroom and kitchen while Sunday is when you tackle the living room and bedrooms. You can also choose to break your cleaning up by cleaning tasks. For instance, you can block out separate times to sweep, clean the glass, or vacuum.
Listen to Music
Music can be a great tool for making just about any mundane task just a bit more fun. Create a playlist with all of your favorite songs. Upbeat songs can help you set a steady tempo for your cleaning so you may even get the job done faster. If you want to use your music to get your chores done even faster, you can even challenge yourself to finish a task before the end of a song!
Put a Movie on in the Background
This is a similar strategy to putting on music. Distract yourself with something more engaging to make the boring task at hand a little bit more enjoyable. Putting on a movie in the background can give you a chance to take mini breaks as you clean. This is a good tactic for cleaning the room your tv is in or stationary chores like folding laundry.
Listen to an Audio Book or Podcast
Why not learn something new while you’re cleaning? Or catch up on the latest conversion between your favorite comedians? Perhaps even finally get around to that book you’ve had your eye on? Podcasts and audiobooks are a perfect cleaning companion. Pop in your headphones and get to work on your most tedious cleaning tasks. You can even make it a rule that you hold off on listening to your favorite shows or books until you start a cleaning task. You might actually start to look forward to your cleaning routine!
Catch Up With Friends and Family
Cleaning can be a great time to catch up with loved ones on the phone. This is easier if you have wireless headphones. You can chat with your friends and family as you’re scrubbing away, sweeping, or organizing your home.
Bribe Yourself and Participants
Pavlov’s dogs yourself into cleaning! The power of association truly is pretty miraculous. If you reward yourself every time you complete your chores, you’re more likely to look forward to them or at the very least not procrastinate on them. Reward yourself with your favorite treat, drives with a friend, takeout, a trip to the boutique – whatever will keep you motivated! This works for getting your kiddos and partner involved too! Bribe the kids with candy or a special treat. And perhaps pick something out with your partner that you will both look forward to after cleaning.
Track Cleaning Like a Workout
Cleaning can work up a sweat! Labor-intensive cleaning tasks such as scrubbing your floors or deep cleaning the bathroom can raise your heart rate decently. Use your chores to reach your fitness goals. If you have a fitness tracker, you can keep track of your steps or set a goal to burn a certain amount of calories.
Get Better Cleaning Supplies
Old, low-quality, ineffective cleaning tools and products can be a big factor in how miserable cleaning can be. They can make cleaning take longer than necessary. Furthermore, organic products are great but be sure to research which ones are most effective. Not all of them are truly up to the task. It’s also a good idea to invest in quality microfiber cloths and sponges, a microfiber mop, and a good vacuum. It will be well worth it to get better tools to cut back on the time and effort that goes into cleaning your home.
